a chat with interior designer and stylist Laura Trøstrup

Earlier this year I sat down with interior designer and stylist Laura Trøstrup for a coffee and chat at her studio in Copenhagen. After bumping into Laura at numerous design events we kept in contact, as I was in Copenhagen for northmodern it was the perfect opportunity for me to pop over to Laura’s studio. Learning more about her work, how she got to where she is now and have a nosey around, of course!

Based in a converted warehouse, this studio is a co-working space of my dreams! I walked in, everyone was busy at their desks (beautiful Danes as you can imagine!), Jazz is playing gently in the background and I immediately swoon over the industrial windows, stand up/adjustable desks, each desk had its own 265 Paolo Rizzatto wall lamp, and Vipp bins too!…. sigh. I must not forget to mention designer resource library and communal kitchen, this place was so cool.

After chatting a little too loudly in the communal kitchen (oops) we moved onto the conference room where Laura told me all about her work in the past. When it comes to experience, Laura has A LOT! From working at jewellery and watch makers, Dyrberg Kern, interior stylist for various companies, becoming a freelance stylist with clients such as the BO Concept. Also embracing magazine world, having had her own weekly trend page in Alt for Damerne magazine for 4 years.

Laura had her first child in 2008, as a driven and creative woman she had a vision of having her own blog, The Sweet Spot, ‘a window to show style’ , with an interiors focus and to share a little happiness along the way. This became a great success and is one of her many current day jobs, among working as a freelance interior designer and interior stylist for her company Reform Living, and a freelance design writer for BoligLiv magazine.

Below are a few images of her styling work for clients Fabula Living, Ugeplan and Klip Klap.

It’s clear that Laura wears many hats in terms of work, but this seems to be her magic formula for a lengthy freelance success within the design industry. Intrigued to hear what her current projects are, and a little insight into Danish design I asked a few interview like questions……

What projects are you working on right now?

At the moment I am all about interior design. My private client account is growing rapidly and it s so much fun and satisfaction to help families feeling at home in their place. Also I recently started doing a big interior project for a home for elder people, upgrading their living rooms and shared room in a balance of cosy home and modern workplace. So exiting.

What was the most exciting project that you’ve worked on?

Having been self employed for almost 10 years its hard to pick one project. I love the fast, big ones as much as much as the small ongoing ones. What gets me is the people and long term relations, where our cooperation is a development.

Which danish design brands do you see making exciting new products lately?

There is so much talent, both in the young upcoming category and the more commercial level. What we Danes do good is the price level friendly, democratic, fresh design and in this category you have to applause Hay and Fem Living for having renewed the business.

Then one for fun……

As you know, I’m trying to learn some Danish and I’m pretty bad at it, ha, but to help me learn a little more can you tell me your favourite Danish word OR saying?

Ha, that’s a hard one: but try to say and guess these three colours: Rød, blå, grøn 😉

With my northern accent that was pretty hard! but I’m practicing!

To see more of Laura Trøstrup ‘s work head over to her blog thesweetspot.dk , for styling and design reformliving.dk and check out her instagram page for up to date Danish design news.

What a great space and inspirational lady. I love the little chairs on the windowsill, and also I might pinch that idea of the write-on acrylic on standoffs as a to do list/noticeboard (another job for my laser-cutting boyfriend!)
