Expanding my creativity, sculpting life models (no. 1)

figure sculpture

It seems like another lifetime ago when I was at university obsessively working with clay. I have a BA hons in Decorative arts which was an applied arts course where I learnt about many different aspects of design and making. For the making part I specialised in ceramics. I remember never wanting to leave the studio, it was such a fun, creative space. My career began far from a clay filled studio. Instead I started designing homes in Kensington and Chelsea. Quite the jump but I was trained very well. Though there was a connection from understanding design, materials, process etc, it helped a lot.

Years have gone by and my ceramic studio days seemed somewhat tucked away never to surface again. Then my friend and ex interior design colleague (how has also moved to Copenhagen) invited me to her evening class sculpting life models.  Not what I’m trained in at all! However I feel that once you know how clay works and you have the ‘observational eye’ in design then you can be creative in many different areas.

So I’ve joined a small evening class! (some of you may have been following my stories on instagram) This is the result of my first ever sculpting of a life model. This was made in two sessions (I missed one session). I’m pretty proud of it, it’s not perfect and maybe that’s why I like it.

What it has taught me is to keep creative. It’s fun, relaxes me, gets me away from the screen and I’m learning a new skill. I’ll share my progress with a picture of each piece fired and continue to keep creative. Expanding my creativity, sculpting life models (no. 1)Expanding my creativity, sculpting life models (no. 1)

What creative classes or activities do you do in your spare time?
