Exploring Scandinavia Sweden Travel

Malmö – the Swedish town from across the bridge [a guide]

[in partnership with @malmotown]

With Copenhagen being so close and accessible to many of my favourite Scandinavian towns and cities, it’s about time I explored more! Across the famous Øresund bridge to Sweden is a beautiful town, Malmö. It is so quick to get there from Copenhagen I feel foolish not visiting it sooner. With thanks to Malmö town (sponsored) I spent a few packed days exploring Malmö town with my fellow blogger friend Cate St Hill.

Whenever I visit a new city or town I like to take it in slowly. Drink coffee, stroll the streets looking at the beautiful buildings, find a few good spots to eat and discover new design.

(I’ve realised now that this guide about my trip is going to be long. Mostly pictures and mostly fika)

WHERE I STAYED

OHBOY HOTEL

The Ohboy Hotel is  a set of apartments, at the top are residential and hotel apartments on the ground floor. Designed on a split level with a kitchen, seating area on the upper level, the lower level has beds (one double bed, one single) and a shower room.  I’d say it’s ideal for a couple to stay as it’s quite compact. The apartments we full of Swedish design which I loved!  All very cool and contemporary.

Cate and I stayed in the same apartment, it was cosy and much like a sleep over. We had very warm nights (this may just be a reflection of the very warm summer we’ve had), I can imagine the apartments will be so cosy in the winter.  We also had access to bikes which was very fun. Malmö is a great bike friendly town.

MY FAVOURITE FIND

AB SMÅLAND

The joy when I find a new design and lifestyle store. AB Småland is a MUST to visit. It pretty much has everything, café, clothing, homewares, plants and reclaimed furniture. I was probably so wowed because it was so new to me. Though I must say the scale of the store, styling and chilled out vibe certainly helped.

FIKA….!! COFFEE SHOPS TO VISIT….

NOIR KAFFEKULTUR

A short walk from central station and my first stop for coffee at Noir. Very cosy and nordic inside with signs on the tables not allowing laptops and encouraging that we speak to each other instead.  Outside they have a relaxed almost parisienne vibe, though I did spot Danish design! The plank bench from Skagerak. A very cute café

JORD

This place was so cool and quite big too. A café and concept store located in the Västra Sorgenfri neighbourhood of Malmö. A very cool place to visit, it kinda reminded me of the quiet areas in Amsterdam.

SLOTTSTRÄDSGÅRDENS KAFÉ

Take a walk around the moat of Malmöhus Slott (castle) and through the picturesque gardens and you’ll find the cute Slottsrädsgådens kafé  (castle gardens café). It feels like you’re in the countryside, so tranquil and surrounded by greenery.

DISCOVER THE OLD TOWN

The old buildings in Malmö are so cute. Make sure to look up!

PADDLE  ON THE CANAL

Hopping onto a boat or in my case a pedal boat is a really fun thing to do. Cate and I found City Boats, they hire out pedalos/pedal boats for to explore the canal that circles around Malmö centre and the beautiful gardens.

I ride a bike most days but these were quite a different pedal workout. Both Cate and I hadn’t voiced that we were both shattered and kept paddling really fast, BOTH secretly thinking ‘wow she’s really going fast, I better keep up‘. Lesson is – speak out! It was so funny when we realised that we were trying to keep up with each other, haha. Very fun.

HEAD TO THE BEACH

A great and memorable thing we did was plan a picnic on the beach. Searching the local shops for picnic essentials and discovering food halls and supermarkets. We cycled to the beach while the sun was slowly setting and set up for a relaxing evening by the sea. Though an influx of wasps made it quite hilarious, or should I say our reactions to the wasps were hilarious!

GO TO THE INCREDIBLE FOODHALL!

Malmö Saluhall is a beautiful food hall with restaurants, deli’s, shops and stalls. The standard throughout seemed quite high. I really like the feel of this place and will be my first visit when I return to Malmö.

…… MORE TO DISCOVER IN MALMÖ……

I will come back to Malmö to research and share an in depth take on the arts and culture. This trip was more to discover the town.  It was such a hot few days we wanted to spend most of it outside. I know that I have only touched the surface of what to discover. We did visit

and also ate at a high end new nordic restaurant Bord 13, which was so delicious and fresh!

Nordic cuisine in Malmö

I confess. I underestimated the Malmö. It has much more to offer than I had anticipated. I’m excited to return.

Do let me know what you’d like to discover in Malmö and I’ll try to add it to my next trip.
