Skandium’s eco townhouse for LDF18 with Montana and Skagerak

During this year’s London Design Festival (2018) the Brompton design district has focussed their theme on ‘Material Consequences‘. There are exhibitions and events that highlight responsible design, sustainability and ethical commitment. Skandium has chosen to take part and collaborate with two Danish brands, Montana and Skagerak, by designing their very own eco townhouse.

Both companies work with sustainably sourced materials and responsible manufacturing. Including corporate responsibility initiatives. They have completely different styles but share a common message of design consciousness and accountability.

Skandium eco townhouse

I have captured some shots from the Eco townhouse. Sharing the colourful, stylish designs and contemporary approach to ecological and sustainable design.

Montana

Known to be unapologetically bold in style, colour and quality. Bold colours are not something you’d normally associate with a highly sustainable and ethical company. Montana (and many other Danish companies) love colour. Here at the eco townhouse they have shown that being eco doesn’t always mean light woods and muted greys. By choosing to use ecological materials you can still have fun with colour.

‘Montana has long implemented a ‘cradle- to-grave’ analyses of the environmental consequences of a given product, and since 2007 have exclusively used water-based lacquer colours, which neither smell nor contain solvents.‘

Joakim Lassen, CEO of Montana, says “We have always thought that Montana will only survive if the business runs on good values, so to speak, and maintains high ethical standards. Companies are the most powerful drivers in terms of changing the world to a better place. Companies are no longer measured in terms of profit or being the world’s best. They are increasingly being measured by being best FOR the world. This is our philosophy, too.”

Skagerak

Within Skandium’s eco townhouse Skagerak have focussed on the garden and basement with beautifully natural colours and tones.

‘Skagerak is founded on the principles of sustainable, responsible design, and is a member of the B Corp movement – certified ‘benefit corporations’ meeting the highest standards for social and environmental, performance, accountability and transparency.’

Skagerak famously collaborate with independent designers and create both traditional and contemporary products. They work closely with zero waste programmes and social initiatives such as using the visually impaired to products. The materials used are of the highest quality and ethical standards for example, FSC-certified wooden furniture harvested locally from Danish forests and other sustainably sourced forests.
