Denmark Design hotels Exploring Scandinavia

Design hotel – a minimalist apartment at STAY Copenhagen

I love finding new places to stay in Copenhagen, especially well designed ones. When I discovered STAY Copenhagen I HAD to book some nights there! This converted industrial building (in the Island Brygge area of Copenhagen) was originally designed to house the creative elite, those priced out of the city centre and searching for space. The owners wanted to retain the building’s characteristic ‘concrete skeleton’ and by doing so the building became hugely popular with painters, musicians and designers.

In 2006 the creative collective left the building, also leaving the concrete skeleton marked with tags, drawings, installations and more. The need for space was a key part of the design ethos for the apartments, and the creative past still emanates the walls and ceilings, STAY wanted it to stay.

This building contains 172 design apartments, Cofoco restaurants below and even my fav Danish supermarket Irma. There are 8 styles of design apartments, all designed with Scandinavian minimalism by Danish design brand HAY.

After roughly a ten minute walk from Island Brygge station, I arrived at STAY Copenhagen. It was evident that they are huge design lovers as there were so many cool products that I recognised! I instantly felt at home. What was even better, I had been upgraded to the Copenhagen loft XL!

The apartment was incredible and HUGE, designed and furnished by HAY in a very minimalist monochrome style (which I love)! It was completely open plan with living room, kitchen, dining, utility room, wet room, w c and bedroom, oh and balcony too! There were scribbles on the ceiling and pillars, raw concrete, white walls and a polished floor, it had a very cool urban vibe.

As the space was so open, the shower was on full display, it steamed up in no time making a steamy privacy screen. Good job because I’m no exhibitionist! haha

Within the bathroom there was a secluded room which had a Duravit wall hung pan, Catalano basin and my fav Vipp bins. I would have liked to see Vola taps, I think that would have completed the look (once a bathroom designer always a bathroom designer).

The apartment came with a balcony which was nice in the evening, relaxing with a glass of wine. The area is new and surrounded in new developments and construction works, though it didn’t disturb the stay at all, it was still very peaceful.

Spoilt for choice, two huge HAY sofas, one for me and one for the boyfriend, we just wanted Hansel to be there!

Love the concrete pillars with scribbles. We also had a kitchen which made the stay feel quite homely, though I only heated up a pizza.

The shadows in this place were beautiful against the plain walls and floor, it made the place look really dramatic.

Even though the space was huge it did get hot, I guess that’s because it was so hot outside and the windows were so big. There’s was no air-con that I could see (but a thermostat) however there were doors within the big glass windows that you can open inwards. Once we opened the window/doors the temperature was perfect.

The roof top is open for guests to bask in the sun, enjoy panoramic views of the city, the harbour and even the Bella centre in the distance.

As you can tell by the last picture, sat in protest on the roof, I didn’t want to leave. I wish I could have stayed there longer, maybe another time……

Ok, I give up. Where did you hide your suitcase? It looks like a totally amazing place but did it manage to feel welcoming despite the starkness of the design?

haha, there was a secret room! It was like a utility room and changing room together. That was VERY messy!
